Good afternoon everyone,

What a fantastic day Year 3 had at Celtic Harmony. Our young historians stepped back in time to explore life from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, trading their modern school life for a day in the wild.

The adventure began as we passed through the site’s imposing Mammoth Gates, where we were met by "intimidating" (but actually very friendly!) Celtic characters. To prove we weren’t Roman invaders, the children had to demonstrate their peaceful intentions before being allowed into the reconstructed Iron Age village.

Taking part in four activities including trading, where we swapped our money for tiny ancient coins and brought Stone Age items from the shop. Next, we moved through the cave and observed the ancient cave paintings, felt the wild boar skin rugs and looked a replica fireplace. We started our chalk drawings of oxen using only the colours of stone powder and chalks that would have been available at the time.

Lunch was next in a replica round house made authentically from mud, wood and straw. We sat on benches around the edge of the round house all facing one-another for a sociable encounter as they would have done back then.

Bronze is made from tin and copper and with these materials we made our own jewellery. An ancient torc which is a bracelet. Then we moved onto pottery and designed our very own clay thumb pot. Many ancient pots used for all types things were found at this site.

The activities of the day combined with questioning really brought our history topic of prehistory to life. I hope you all enjoy viewing the photographs.

Looking ahead to next week, the children will be spending some time rehearsing for our middle school performance of Robin and the Sherwood Hoodies. For their part in the performance, it would be greatly appreciated if you could send your child into school with a black or dark outfit where possible by Friday 20th March.

If you would like to attend the performances, they will be held on Wednesday 25th March at 1:30pm and Thursday 26th March at 6:30pm. Please make sure to book your tickets through the school office as soon as possible.
