Week ending 13th September 2024

 Hello Year Three,

We have had a very busy week, beginning lots of new topics and getting to know each other again.

This week we have been learning place value to 100 in our maths lessons.

The children have used a book called 'Planet Earth' by Isobel Otter and Clara Anganuzzi, to inspire them to write the most beautiful letters to Planet Earth. They will be on display in the classroom within the coming few days.

We began our geography project about volcanoes this week, and the children have learned about the different layers of the planet Earth.

For RE the children learned many Hindu symbols.

We had a computing lesson as we explored digital devices. The children had to sort a range of devices into two groups, one being digital items. They were very surprised when I explained that I did not have any of the items when I was a child!

As the children will be learning Spanish this year, we began by looking at the culture of Spain. We discussed why we are learning to speak Spanish and we began to use greetings.

For PHSE we focussed on feeling sad and left out in the school environment. I was surprised when so many children stated that they had never experienced that feeling. That is a good thing! We talked about strategies to support us if we ever do experience those feelings.

NEXT WEEK

Maths

We will continue with place value. We will be partitioning numbers to 1,000, using number lines to 1,000 and finding 1, 10 or 100 more or less than certain numbers.

Times Tables

The children are working on learning their times tables. They have all been given TT Rockstars logins. There are one or two children who have not received theirs yet but this is being actioned.

The children need to access this at least 2/3 times a week. They will focus on one table at a time. They know which table they are on. If they have forgotten, just ask me.

On Fridays we have a test and each child is tested on the table they are currently working on. I don't move them on to the next table until they have rapid recall of the one they have been learning.

There are many ways to learn tables. Please see me for ideas.

English

Next week we will be beginning a topic on fables. The children will learn the features of fables. We will focus on the story 'The Hare and the Tortoise.' They will role play the story, write a recount and character descriptions.

The children will also have daily comprehension lessons, weekly handwriting lessons and will learn their spellings every day.

Spellings

The children bring a set of spellings home every week. They also have the opportunity to practise them at school every day, but I would advise 'Look, Cover, Spell and Check' at home at least 2/3 times a week.

Reading

We aim to hear the children read individually at least once a week, plus they read a class text as a group. They also hear the teacher read daily. Reading is so important and helps them with all areas of the curriculum. Please hear your child read as often as possible. Please make sure they bring their book and reading record to school every day.

Science

The children have already had a lesson on skeletons, but next week we will focus on the human skeleton.

Geography

Next week we will be looking at how mountains are formed. We will explore the different types of mountain, The children will use a world map and add the mountain ranges.

D and T

We will begin to practise sewing next week, as the children will be making pencil cases.

Spanish

The children are very enthusiastic about learning Spanish and loved learning and saying the greeting phrases today, so we will build on that and learn the numbers to ten.

RE

As we learned many Hindu symbols last week, we will learn Christian symbols next week. We also explore symbols that are not based around a religion. It is surprising how many the children know!

Computing

The children will learn which parts make up digital devices. They will also practise their typing speed.

I wish you all a happy weekend

Ms Davis
