08/02/19 (Updated)

Hello all.

It has felt like a very short week for me as I was ill at the beginning of this week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff that covered for me. The children enjoyed working with them and my absence did not disrupt their learning.

Note: I have looked at the most recent Mathletics/Mathseeds effort and participation report and a lot of the children’s time on their programmes is unfortunately is lower than expected. If you encourage your children to use these programmes this would really help support and consolidate their learning. All children do have a blue maths record with their login details on the front. If there are any problems, please don’t hesitate in contacting me.

This Week
PE – Just a reminder, if your child wants to wear goggles please ensure they bring in a note of consent from you. Please also ensure all swimwear is suitable and there are no two-piece swimsuits. If there are any questions, do not hesitate to email me.

Maths- This week in maths the children have been doubling, halving whole numbers. The children have also been using dienes apparatus to solve problems.

English – This week the children have been drafting their fairy tales, most of the children have now finished their fairy tales.

Science – We have been continuing our topic of light and will be looking at sun safety. The children were able to talk about UV and visible light as well as recall the spectrum colours.

Art – This week the children were sketching apples and using colour pencils to shade and add detail.

RE-  We be learnt about symbols in Islam.

Geography- We were reading coordinates on a map.

ICT-  This week in ICT (due to my absence) the children were on their touch typing program. Next week we will start using PowerPoint.

Next Week
PE – The children will continue swimming on Wednesday, football on Thursday afternoon and a 30-minute slot on Friday morning.

Maths- The children will continue their doubling, halving and associative law. The associative law is introduced through using cube arrays to demonstrate that (4 x 2) x 3 is equal to (4 x 3) x 2 and pupils are given opportunities to build their own to secure the concept. Pupils are then introduced to the distributive law in which regrouping is explored so known facts can be used to solve unknown facts. For example, if the product of 8 x 6 is unknown, it can be regrouped to 5 x 6 and 3 x 6. Step 5 then applies the distributive law to the multiplication of 2-digit by 1-digit numbers.

English – We will be starting our non-chronological reports and distinguishing between fiction and non-fiction texts.

Science – We will be continuing our topic of light and will be looking at sun safety.

Art – We will be self-evaluating their sketches and making necessary improvments to produce their final sketch and as a whole class we will create a Cezanne inspired piece of art.

RE-  We be learning about the 5 pillars of Islam.

Geography- Produce a questionnaire to research the local area.

ICT- We will be learning how to use PowerPoint.

Open afternoon
Next Wednesday is open afternoon. From 3pm to 4:30pm you can come to the classroom and look through your children’s learning. This will be a great opportunity to see all the hard work your children are putting in. Please, however, be mindful that school does not finish until 3:20pm so there may still be learning taking place. This session is open from 3-4:30 and you can drop in at any point.

KS2 Valentine’s Disco
Nothing says romance like a school disco! Thursday 14th February 18:15 – 19:15 the children can come in their own clothes and dance the night (the hour) away!

I hope you all have a restful weekend.
