15/02/19

Hello all!

We made it – half term is here! It was really lovely to see some of you this week and celebrate the children’s learning. The children and I had another great week that was topped off with the social event of the half-term: The Valentine’s Disco! This week a letter has gone out about our trip to The Wonderlab at the Science Museum, if this has got lost in transport please let me know and I will send you another. The trip will take place in 16th May 2019.

This week:
PE – The children have really enjoyed swimming on Wednesdays. They will continue swimming next half term.

Maths- The children have continued their doubling, halving and associative law. The associative law is introduced through using cube arrays to demonstrate that (4 x 2) x 3 is equal to (4 x 3) x 2 and pupils are given opportunities to build their own to secure the concept. Pupils are then introduced to the distributive law in which regrouping is explored so known facts can be used to solve unknown facts. For example, if the product of 8 x 6 is unknown, it can be regrouped to 5 x 6 and 3 x 6. Step 5 then applies the distributive law to the multiplication of 2-digit by 1-digit numbers.

English – This week we were writing list poems and kennings. The children produced wonderful poems individually and as a whole class.

Science – This week in science we were looking at different materials and seeing if they were transparent, translucent or opaque. We also related this to sun safety.

Art – We were self-evaluating sketches and making necessary improvements to produce their final sketch and as a whole class we will create a Cezanne inspired piece of art.

RE-  We have made a mobile star and crescent, relating to symbolism in Islam.

Geography- We have produced a questionnaire to research the local area.

Next term:
Maths - Pictograms and scaled bar charts, multiplication and division worded problems, fractions – finding fractions of discrete and continuous quantities.

English – Non-chronological report writing (3 weeks), take one book (2 weeks) and poetry (1 weeks).

RE – Islam and Christianity creation ideas, life as a Muslim/Christian and prayer.

History – Who were the Romans?

ICT – Creating and publishing using ICT.

D&T- Health and varied diet.

Science – Plants: identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants: roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers. Explore the requirements of plants for life and growth (air, light, water, nutrients from soil, and room to grow) and how they vary from plant to plant. Investigate the way in which water is transported within plants. Explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants, including pollination, seed formation and seed dispersal.

PSHE – Healthy me and philosophy.

PE – The children will continue to swim each Wednesday. As well as have their hour PE session Thursday afternoon and half an hour session on Friday morning.
