Week beginning 4th September 2024

 Hello Year Three,

Welcome back to Autumn term 2024.

It is amazing to be teaching you again! I am absolutely thrilled.

The children have settled well and have already begun to access the Year Three curriculum.

Subjects to be covered this half-term

English

We will begin with letter writing as we will be reading a fabulous book called 'Dear Earth' by Isobel Otter and Clara Anganuzzi, which will inspire the children to create wonderful letters to protect our planet.

We will be working with fables and traditional tales the rest of this half-term.

The children will complete a comprehension task on a daily basis. This work will come from the book 'George's Marvellous Medicine' by Roald Dahl.

Spellings will be given out on Fridays to learn for the following Friday when the children will have a test. At the moment the groups are fairly fluid, until I am sure which group is suitable for each child.

Your child will be given a sheet with the spellings on each week which we expect them to practise at home. The spellings will also be posted on the blog each week.

Maths

The children will be representing numbers to 100, counting objects, representing objects and recognising numbers as words. I will post the maths lessons weekly.

They will also be learning the times tables 2, 5, 10, 3 and 4.

Your child will tell you which table they need to learn for the test the following week. Please access TT Rockstars for practise. If your child does not have a login please let me know. It is important that they use this programme as it prepares them well for Year Four.

Science

We have already begun our science topic on animals including humans. The children are very interested in this subject and are showing great enthusiasm.

This week we have been learning about different types of skeleton.

We will also be discovering how muscles work, how the organs in our body function and the nutrition we need to keep healthy and strong.

Religious Education

This year we will explore Christianity and Hinduism.

We will be visiting our local church and a Hindu temple as certain points during the year. I will send you further information nearer the time.

The children will learn to recognise and draw symbols used in both religions. We will look at the food Christians eat at Christmas and Hindus eat to celebrate  Diwali.

Geography

We will be exploring volcanoes during our geography lessons. The children will be discovering where mountains are found and where we have volcanoes. We will explore the effects of a volcano and why we get earthquakes.

D and T

The children will be enhancing their sewing skills as we work with different stitches and design and make pencil cases.

Computing

As we explore digital devices the children will become familiar with imputs and outputs following processes. They will describe a simple process. We will explore how a network is used to share information and how digital devices can be connected.

Spanish

We will begin by looking at Spanish culture.

The children will learn to count to ten in Spanish. They will learn the vowel sounds.

They will learn to use the names for colours in Spanish and basic greetings. They will learn to ask for someone's name and tell their own name.

PHSE

We will experience how we feel about being in our world.

Our lessons will incorporate celebrating difference and anti-bullying.

PE kits

The children need a PE kit in school at all times. At the moment the weather is warm enough for shorts and a tee-shirt and a change of shoes. They also need a kit for the Wednesday afternoon football lesson. This lesson is at the end of the day and as it gets wetter outside their clothes and shoes will become muddy. When this happens they will need to take this home and have it washed, while the normal PE kit stays in school. The football kit needs to have shoes that can get muddy and warm flexible clothing such as jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt.

If you have any queries regarding this please come and see me.

Bags

There is limited space in the cloakroom area therefore I would appreciate it if the children could refrain from bringing large bags into school. All they need in school is their reading book and reading record. If you still have the reading bags from Year One they are ideal.

Please come and see if you need clarification on anything or you have concerns or queries.

Have a wonderfully relaxing weekend.

Ms Davis
