Week Ending 19.9.25
Hello everyone
I hope you are all well and have had a lovely week. What a beautiful sunny day to end it on! We have had such a wonderful week in Year 3 full of learning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:
English
This week, we continued reading The BFG and used it as inspiration for our own writing. The children have been busy creating similes to make their descriptions more exciting, writing command sentences and spotting words with the suffixes -sion, -cian and -tion in the text. Next week, we will take this further by using synonyms to write speech and practising how to use fronted adverbials with the correct punctuation — an important step in making our writing flow beautifully.
Maths
Our place value topic has kept us busy working with numbers up to 1000. We have been partitioning numbers in different ways and exploring what happens when we find 1, 10 or 100 more or less. Next week, we will be building number lines to 1000 and learning how to compare and order numbers accurately — a key skill for problem solving later in the year.
Science
In our science topic Animals Including Humans, we have been learning about the skeleton and the incredible bones that support and protect our bodies. We have looked at the three main types of skeletons: endoskeletons (like ours), exoskeletons (like insects) and hydrostatic skeletons (like worms and jellyfish). We also explored the different types of bones in the human skeleton — long bones, short bones, flat bones and irregular bones — and how each has a different job from helping us move to protecting vital organs. Next week, we are very lucky to have an orthopaedic surgeon visiting the class to share their knowledge about bones and joints and how they help people recover from injuries. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the children to see science in action!
PSHE
Our PSHE lessons have focused on recognising our worth, celebrating our unique qualities and setting personal goals for the year ahead. The children have been brilliant at reflecting on their achievements and sharing positive affirmations about themselves. Next week, we will be discussing how to face new challenges with a positive mindset, making responsible choices and knowing when to ask for help.
Geography
In geography, we have been exploring how mountains are formed, looking at fold mountains, fault-block mountains and volcanic mountains. The children were fascinated to learn how the Earth’s crust moves and creates these incredible landscapes. Next week, we will move on to volcanoes — what they are, why they erupt and where in the world they are most commonly found. We will be using maps to locate major volcanoes and understand why so many are found along the Pacific "Ring of Fire".
Spanish
Our Spanish lessons have been full of energy as we have been practising saying goodbye in different ways and recognising the key phonemes o and a. Next week, we will be learning greetings for different times of the day such as buenos días (good morning), buenas tardes (good afternoon) and buenas noches (good evening/night) as well as when each is used. This will help the children build more natural and polite conversations in Spanish.
