Week Ending 26.9.25
Hello everyone,
It has been a lovely sunny week but the chilly mornings are starting to
creep up on us – autumn is definitely on the way!
We have had a very exciting week in Year 3. On Wednesday, we were visited by
an orthopaedic surgeon, who came to share their knowledge about the bones of the
body. The children absolutely loved the experience and had a great time
examining a life-size skeleton to see how everything fits together.
To help us prepare for our half-term project, The 500 Word Challenge
(mentioned in the blog posted on 12/9), we took part in the BBC’s live
introductory lesson. The children were thrilled when we even received a
shout-out from Sir Lenny Henry! The session inspired lots of creative thinking
and gave the class plenty of story ideas to explore in the coming weeks.
Next week in class, the children will be continuing to read The BFG in
English. We will look closely at how Roald Dahl creates exciting characters and
settings and the children will be practising writing descriptive sentences of
their own. We will also keep working on fronted adverbials and summarising key
events from the story to build our comprehension skills.
In maths, we will begin a new unit on addition and subtraction. We will be
practising mental strategies for adding and subtracting 1s 10s and 100s and
then move on to using column methods for both operations. We will also focus on
solving word problems to apply these skills in real-life contexts.
In geography, we will explore what happens when a volcano erupts and look at
how volcanic eruptions can change the landscape. The children will learn about
some of the most famous volcanoes around the world and consider how they affect
the people and animals that live nearby.
In science, we will continue our work on the human skeleton. The children
will be naming more bones, such as the skull, femur and ribs, and comparing
them to the skeletons of different animals to discover how bones can look and
work differently depending on how an animal moves.
In computing, we have been learning about digital devices. Next week, we
will find out more about how these devices work together to share information
and how they are used in our daily lives.
Next Friday, we have our Harvest Festival, which we are very much looking
forward to seeing you at. We are also very excited for the arrival of this
year’s Book Fair, which will be open in the school hall after school from
Thursday 2nd to Tuesday 7th October. This is always a wonderful opportunity for
the children to discover new books and get inspired to read more at home.
