Hello Year Three,

 

We have had a fabulous week. The children have settled well and are working hard!

I have arranged a ‘meet the teacher’ session for Tuesday 15^th September at 5pm. As I was unable to meet you at the end of last term it will be a chance for us to catch up.

We finally have our photo for the classroom door!

I will be setting a class project for homework soon, but there is a separate half term project which Mr Chanter has set for all the children. Please see the details below.

Half Term Project – 500 Words

Due in the week commencing 19th October 2026

500 Words Challenge

I would like all children to enter the BBC’s 500 Words Challenge. All they need to do is write a story they would love to read in 500 words or fewer. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are not marked – it is all about creativity and imagination!

500 Words celebrates children’s creativity, encouraging young writers from across the UK to create an original story. This year, the celebrity judges include Malorie Blackman, Charlie Higson, Francesca Simon, Sir Lenny Henry, Frank Cottrell-Boyce and Rose Ayling-Ellis.

The bronze, silver and gold winners in each age category will be revealed by the BBC in early March 2027. The winning stories will also be read aloud by celebrities on the BBC.

There are lots of prizes to be won too! Winners will receive a bundle of books, while the gold winners will also win 500 books for their school library. Each winning story will also receive a framed, illustrated cover created exclusively by a top children’s illustrator.

Children can only submit one story each. There are very few rules, but please remember that stories must:

• Be 500 words or fewer (the title is not included)
• Be written by an individual, not a group
• Be the child’s own original idea
• Be prose, rather than a rap or poem

Stories must not:

• Include any personal details about the child, including their name
• Recount a historical event (although real people or historical characters can be used as inspiration)
• Be created, written or developed using AI

Stories are judged on:

• Characterisation
• Plot
• Originality
• Language
• Enjoyment

Please note: stories can only be submitted electronically, so they will need to be typed and sent to me rather than handwritten.

Lesson Plans

 

English

As we continue to work from the book ‘The First Drawing’ we will be writing a diary entry in the first person.

The children will learn to use apostrophes for omission and spelling rules when writing plural nouns.

The focus on Wednesday will be to recognise the feelings of the characters in the story and we will carry out some role play.

 

Spellings

 

As you are aware I have created two spelling groups. This will probably increase to three groups as I am recognising that I need a higher level for some children. The groups are fluid at the moment. If a child struggles each week and only gets a few correct I find it is more sensible to move them to words they will find less challenging. If you feel that your child should be in a different group please come and see me and we can chat about the most appropriate challenge for him/her.

I will be setting the groups next Friday once another test has been carried out.

 

 

 

Maths

 

We will be working on place value to 100.

 

Times Tables

 

I tested the children today to find out which table they need to focus on. They should all be aware of the table they need to learn for next week’s test.

We spent some time using TT Rockstars today and the children have taken their login details home (in reading records) so that they can practise tables at home. They need to learn their tables with rapid recall.

 

 

Science

 

We will be examining the human skeleton in more detail next week, as we discover the organs that are protected by the different parts of the skeleton.

 

Geography

 

The children are enjoying our topic on volcanoes and will be discovering how mountains are formed.

 

Art

 

Our project is called ‘Growing Artists’ and we will be using a variety of skills in the coming weeks. Next week we will be focusing on still life drawings.

 

 

 

 

 

Spanish

 

The children are already answering the register in Spanish! Next week we will be expanding our vocabulary for a variety of greetings.

 

ICT

 

We will be having a lesson on e-safety.

 

RE

 

Next week’s focus will be on Christian symbols.
