Our Fantastic Week of Learning!

We’ve had such an exciting week in Year 3! It began with our wonderful trip to the Temple — a calm, thoughtful and inspiring day where we learnt so much about the Hindu faith and about ourselves. Everyone showed such respect and curiosity and it truly felt like a privilege to share that experience together.

In English, we have started a brand-new book called The First Drawing. It’s a powerful story that explores history through imagination, helping us think about how the very first artists might have created their work thousands of years ago. The children have used modal verbs to create imaginative scenarios and written diary entries using plurals — such fantastic creativity! We’ll be continuing with this book next week as we dive even deeper into the story.

During our comprehension lessons, we’ve been learning all about the Titanic — what a fascinating and emotional topic! The children have been so engaged, asking brilliant questions about how and why the ship hit the iceberg.

In Maths with Mrs Worton, the children have been working on:

· Subtracting tens across one hundred
· Making connections between numbers
· Adding two numbers (no exchange)
· Subtracting two numbers (no exchange)
· Adding two numbers (across a ten)

The children are really enjoying having Maths lessons with a different teacher, as Mrs Worton brings maths to life in such a creative and exciting way!

In Art, we’ve been studying the incredible artist Stephen Wiltshire, an autistic savant who has a photographic memory and can draw entire cityscapes from memory after just one look. The children are now creating their own artwork in Stephen’s style, focusing on detail, perspective and careful observation.

This unit also links beautifully with Black History Month, as we’ve been celebrating and learning about inspirational Black figures who have made a positive impact in art, culture, and beyond. We’ve discussed how Stephen Wiltshire’s talent and perseverance remind us that everyone’s mind works in special and unique ways — and that our differences make us truly amazing!

In Geography, we’ve started learning about earthquakes. The children have been fascinated to discover how the Earth’s plates move and what causes the ground to shake. We’ll soon be exploring how people around the world prepare for and stay safe during earthquakes.

PSHE has been woven throughout our week, continuing the themes from our Temple visit. The children have been reflecting on kindness, empathy, and understanding others. We’ve talked about how it’s important to see what people are like on the inside, not just how they look on the outside. It’s been lovely to see the children connecting with themselves and each other in such thoughtful ways.

It’s been a busy, creative, and inspiring week in Year 3. The children have shown curiosity, kindness, and confidence in all their learning — we can’t wait to see what next week brings!
