This week, Year 3 became geologists to explore the hidden properties of rocks. We also took a break to learn the science behind a British classic: a nice cup of tea.

The Permeability Test

We investigated permeability, which describes whether a material allows water to pass through it.

Prediction: Before testing, we looked at our rock samples (Chalk, Sandstone, Slate, and Marble) and guessed which ones would soak up the water.

Observation: We watched closely to see if the water stayed in a bead on top or disappeared into the rock.

What We Discovered: Permeable Rocks: Rocks like Chalk and Sandstone acted like sponges. The water soaked right in because they have tiny, connected gaps (pores) inside them.

Impermeable Rocks: Rocks like Slate and Marble were like "umbrellas." The water just rolled off the surface because they are too dense for water to enter.

Tea-Time with inspiration from our text ‘Cloud Tea Monkeys.’

How Tea Works: When we add a tea bag to hot water, a process called diffusion happens. The tea particles spread out from the bag until the whole cup changes colour and flavour.

The Perfect Brew: We learned that black tea needs boiling water to taste its best, while green tea prefers water that is slightly cooler. We all had a taste of a different type of tea and took a sip of warm tea.

Health Fact: Tea contains antioxidants, which help keep our bodies healthy. However, children should stick to caffeine-free teas.

Have a lovely weekend, please include some reading, spelling practice and practice the 3 and 4 X’s tables for next Friday’s test.

PS. A note from Miss Davis

This week has been full of excitement as we continue preparing for our upcoming production of Robin & The Sherwood Hoodies! The children have been working incredibly hard to learn their lines, songs and dances, and we are really looking forward to sharing it with you.

Our performances will take place on:

Wednesday, 1:30pm

Thursday, 6:30pm

I do expect all children to be in attendance for both performances. If your child is unable to attend, please let me know as soon as possible so we can make any necessary arrangements.

Kind regards,

Miss Davis
