Year 3 Blog – A Week of Focused Learning

The children have been working exceptionally hard this week and have shown great enthusiasm in their learning. It has been wonderful to see how engaged they are across all subjects — from exploring new mathematical concepts to developing their writing skills and deepening their understanding in science and topic lessons.

I am really pleased with the way the class has adapted to a few new rules and routines that help us all work successfully in Year 3. These small changes are already helping to create a calm and focused learning environment where everyone can do their best.

As I mentioned in last week’s blog, please remember that if you have any concerns, you are always welcome to email me or speak to me at the end of the school day. It’s always best to address any worries straight away, and I am more than happy to support both you and your child in any way I can.

Our curriculum is continuing exactly as before, and I want to reassure you that these adjustments have not affected your child’s education in any way. The children are continuing to make excellent progress, and their enthusiasm for learning is wonderful to see.

Our Learning This Week

In English, the children have been busy writing their own stories, focusing on how to create a strong opening, build an exciting climax, and use the conjunction ‘if’ to bring their story to a thoughtful ending. They have really impressed me with their imagination and growing confidence as writers. At the end of the week, we enjoyed watching The BFG and followed this with some fantastic discussion work — comparing the film to the book by identifying similarities and differences. The children shared some wonderful insights! We are now looking forward to starting a brand-new book next week, and the class is already eager to find out what it will be.

In Maths, we have been continuing to spot patterns when adding and subtracting. The children have practised adding 1s across a 10, adding 10s across a 100, and also subtracting 1s and 10s across these boundaries. This has really helped them to deepen their understanding of place value and number structure. We are very fortunate to have Mrs Worton, our maths specialist teacher, leading the lessons this week while I have been checking in on Foundation. The children have responded so positively to her engaging teaching style and are growing in confidence with these important skills.

In Art, we have been focusing on shading techniques — exploring how different levels of pressure and pencil control can create light and dark areas in a drawing. The children worked extremely hard in their sketchbooks, practising their skills carefully and annotating their work to reflect on what went well and what they would like to improve. It has been wonderful to see their growing attention to detail and pride in their work.

In Religious Education this week, we have also been discussing our upcoming visit to the Hindu Temple on Monday. To prepare, the children have read the story of Rama and Sita and have been learning about the festival of Diwali. We explored a range of Hindu artefacts, including statues, diva lamps, and traditional clothing, discussing their meanings and how they are used in worship and celebration. The children were fascinated by the beauty and symbolism behind each item and showed great respect and curiosity during our discussions.

In Geography, we have continued our topic on volcanoes and life around them. The children have been learning about how volcanoes form, what happens when they erupt, and how communities live nearby. They have enjoyed sharing interesting facts and have shown real curiosity when discussing how people adapt to living in such dynamic environments. Their thoughtful questions and enthusiasm have made our lessons especially enjoyable!

A Little Mystery... Finally, you may hear your child mention that Robin Hood has been in the classroom all week! I’ll let the children share more about what that’s all about — but let’s just say it has certainly sparked a lot of excitement and imagination in Year 3!
