Week Ending 3.10.25
Good afternoon,
It was lovely to see so many of you at our Harvest Festival today. The children had a wonderful time celebrating together, and the cakes and biscuits certainly made the occasion even more special. Thank you for all your support in making it such an enjoyable event.
What a great week we have had in Year 3. It has been a real pleasure to teach the children and to see how much progress they are already making. They have shown great enthusiasm for their learning and have worked incredibly hard. I am also very pleased with how smoothly the transition from Mrs Beadle to myself has gone, which is a credit to the children’s resilience and positive attitudes.
Please do remember that if you have any concerns, you are very welcome to email me or speak to me at the end of the school day. It is always best to address any worries straight away, and I am keen to support both you and your child in any way I can. The curriculum is continuing in exactly the same way as before, so please be reassured that this change has not had any impact on your child’s education.
In English, the children have been continuing their work on The BFG. We have been focusing on how authors use fronted adverbials to make their writing more descriptive and engaging. The children practised this skill by adding detail about when, where and how actions take place, which really brought their sentences to life. They then applied what they had learnt by writing their own imaginative stories about giants. It was lovely to see the children drawing on Roald Dahl’s style but also adding their own creative twists – we had everything from gentle, friendly giants to mischievous ones causing chaos!
In Maths, we have been building on our understanding of place value by looking at how to add and subtract ones, tens and hundreds. The children explored different strategies to make sure their calculations were accurate, such as using number lines, partitioning and column methods. We have been encouraging them to explain their thinking and to choose the most efficient strategy for each problem, which has helped to develop both their confidence and their flexibility with numbers.
In Art, we have been learning about how artists use shapes in their work. The children have been experimenting with combining simple shapes to create striking effects and to convey different ideas and moods. They particularly enjoyed creating abstract pieces using overlapping geometric patterns, and it was lovely to see how individual each child’s work turned out.
In Geography, we have been finding out what it is like to live near a volcano. The children considered both the advantages, such as fertile soil and the opportunities for tourism, and the disadvantages, including the risks to people’s safety and the destruction that eruptions can cause. We looked at real-life examples of volcanic regions and discussed how communities adapt to these unique environments. The children asked some very thoughtful questions, and it has been wonderful to see their curiosity growing.
It has been a busy but very rewarding week, and I am proud of how much effort and enthusiasm the children have put into all areas of their learning.
